Friends Theological College is owned and operated by Friends United Meeting (FUM) on land belonging to East Africa Yearly Meeting. Friends United Meeting is a global body of Friends (Quakers) currently consisting of 34 Yearly Meetings and associations in ten countries and on four continents. The purpose statement of FUM reads: Friends United Meeting commits itself to energize and equip Friends through the power of the Holy Spirit to gather people into fellowships where Jesus Christ is known, loved, and obeyed as Teacher and Lord.
The international headquarters of Friends United Meeting is located at 101 Quaker Hill Drive, Richmond IN 47374 USA. The African headquarters is located on the 6th floor of the Kenya Reinsurance Plaza in Kisumu City Center, PO Box 478-40100, Kisumu, Kenya. The global membership of Friends United Meeting’s constituent yearly meetings is approximately 350,000 adult full members, of which 90% are located in East Africa. The highest decision-making body of FUM is the Triennial Session, held every three years in locations around the world, along with the General Board, which meets more often. The most recent triennial gathering met in Wichita, Kansas in July, 2017 and the next triennial meeting will be in Kenya in 2020. Friends United Meeting is a founding member of both the World Council of Churches and the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA.
FUM is governed by a General Board consisting of representatives appointed from all the 34 member yearly meetings. The FUM General Board holds two meetings in North America and two in East Africa each year. The FUM General Board appoints the Board of Managers of Friends Theological College.
